Dr Noor Hisham: Malaysia’s new Covid-19 infections breach 2,000 mark for first time in over a month

KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 — The Health Ministry reported 2,148 new Covid-19 cases and 10 deaths in the past 24 hours.

The last time the country’s daily figures were above 2,000 was on March 5.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement said the total number of infections now stands at 367,977.

Sarawak recorded the highest number of cases with 512, followed by Selangor with 459 cases.

Other states that reported cases are Kelantan (221), Sabah (202), Johor (182), Kuala Lumpur (171), Penang (134), Terengganu (57), Melaka (53), Perak (51), Negri Sembilan (34), Pahang (34), Kedah (26), Putrajaya (8), Labuan (3) and Perlis (1).

Dr Noor Hisham said currently there 17,575 active Covid-19 cases, while the number of Covid-19 patients requiring intensive care has risen to 212, up from a recent low of 147 on March 12.

On the deaths, the Health director-general said they comprised nine Malaysians and one foreigner aged between 54 and 97.

He said eight of them had suffered from existing medical conditions while the virus was detected in the foreigner after she had passed away.

Meanwhile, another two cases of the UK B.1.1.7 variant have been detected, Dr Noor Hisham said, adding that there are now a total of five cases linked to B.1.1.7 in Malaysia.

He said the two cases were Malaysians who had a travel history to Poland last month, adding that they tested positive for the virus on March 30.

On clusters, Dr Noor Hisham said health authorities have detected 15 new Covid-19 clusters.

Nine of them were workplace clusters and the other six were community clusters.

Five clusters were detected in Kelantan, four in Sabah, two in Selangor and one each in Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Terengganu and Kedah.
