Dr. Ellen Marmur Answers All Your Sunscreen Questions

From Harper's BAZAAR

YouTube's comments sections are always a hotbed of dissent and debate. But with our Go to Bed with Me videos—a series that offers a peek inside the nightly skin care routines of your favorite celebrities, experts, and influencers—the myths and facts surrounding skin care in the comments are on another level.

In this episode of Derm Reacts, we call in board-certified skin expert and dermatologist Ellen Marmur, who in 2012, opened her own practice, Marmur Medical, offering a variety of services ranging from cryosurgery to chemical peels. The dermatologist also founded MMSkincare, a line of anti-aging serums, masks, and cutting-edge LED tools to get great skin from the comfort of your bathroom. Below, she reacts to some of the most passionate feedback posted on our Go to Bed with Me episodes.

Should we use sunscreen all the time, even if we won't be outside for too long?

"The myth is that sunscreen blocks vitamin D," says Marmur, responding to a comment suggesting that sunscreen inhibits skin from absorbing vitamin D. "You're gonna get vitamin D through your sunscreen, so you can still wear sunscreen. So it's not really a reason to not wear sunscreen." She mentions that a healthy diet will also increase your intake of vitamin D.

Marmur also warns that even if you aren't outside for too long, skin cancer can still occur from an accumulation of short spurts of exposure to the sun. "Even if you're out for five minutes here, five minutes there, five minutes there," she explains, "you're getting an addition of that sun damage throughout the day."
