GEORGE TOWN, March 4 (Bernama) -- Seberang Jaya assemblyman (ADUN) Dr Afif Bahardin has announced his resignation as a state executive councillor with the Penang government, with effect from today.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said Dr Afif had tendered his letter of resignation as state Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, Rural Development and Health Committee chairman, during a discussion here today.
"I presented the letter of resignation at the State Executive Council meeting convened today and we accepted the decision," Chow said, adding that news of the resignation will be conveyed to Penang Governor Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas.
Speaking at a press conference with the line-up of state executive councillors in attendance, the Chief Minister said copies of the resignation letter would also be shared with Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), the state's legal advisor, the State Secretary and the state's finance officer.

Chow explained that Dr Afif will remain as Seberang Jaya assemblyman, representing PKR and Pakatan Harapan (PH).
He added that in view of the vacated state executive councillor's position, PKR is expected to convene a meeting to decide on a successor.
Meanwhile, asked about the status of two Penang state assemblymen from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), Chow said the state legal office was in contact with the Attorney-General's Chambers for advice on constitutional and legal provisions.
"At the moment, we are uncertain about the status of Bersatu as there is more than one faction in that party...so we will allow this to settle down before we make any decision," he explained.
Penang has 40 State Legislative Assembly seats, with 35 of them held by Pakatan Harapan comprising DAP with 19 seats, PKR (14) and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) holding two seats.
Bersatu and Barisan Nasional each hold two seats, while PAS has one seat.
