Streaming is all the rage nowadays, but there’s nothing quite like having a local collection of music to tap into whenever, wherever using any device with storage and a headphone jack — regardless of whether you have an internet connection or a streaming subscription that permits offline listening.
Unfortunately, sometimes downloading a track isn’t as simple as handing over a dollar. Take SoundCloud, for example. First and foremost an on-demand service, it relies on people streaming music through both its ad-infested website and mobile application (available for Android and iOS).
The other chunk of its revenue comes from people who subscribe to its $12 per month Unlimited membership to listen without being interrupted by an ad and for offline access through its mobile client. But let’s face it: That’s an awful lot to shell out to save a song the artist is offering to its fans for free.
So, how exactly do you download songs from SoundCloud? Well, there are two ways — you can either look for the small Download Icon in the lower-left corner of the track you’re listening to, or you can run the URL through an online extractor. Let’s take a closer look at both of them, starting with the former.
The official way to download songs from SoundCloud
SoundCloud offers its artists the option to make their tracks downloadable. The feature isn’t without its limitations, though, with the main being that you only have the option to download one track at a time — entire playlists aren’t an option.
To download an artist-sanctioned song from SoundCloud, simply hit the button marked Download beneath the track. It should be located below the comment box. If it’s missing, it’s because it hasn’t been marked available for download by the creator.
The unofficial way to download songs from SoundCloud
If you can’t track down the option to download the song you want to save locally from SoundCloud, you’ll need to turn to an alternative method — namely, running the URL through an online extractor to retrieve the audio file from the firm’s server.
Before we dive into the specifics, note that we do not intend for this tool to be used to aid illicit acts, such as piracy; we are only sharing it in the interest of helping honest, law-abiding citizens download their favorite free-to-listen music for offline use.
Now that’s out the way, here’s what you need to do:
Step 1: Find a track you want to download from SoundCloud and copy the URL from the address bar at the top of your browser.
Step 2: Head over to the KlickAud website.
Step 3: Paste the URL and hit the Download button.
That’s all there is to it.
Now that you have formed a collection of music on your desktop, you’re going to want to transfer it to your smartphone for easy access on the move. Not sure where to start? We have a neat guide to walk you through it. Android user? You’ll need this one.
