Don't drag us into political polemics, PAS says amid Umno-Bersatu quarrel

PAS does not want to be involved in political polemics that could lead to instability in the country, said its secretary-general, Takiyuddin Hassan.

This came amid Umno's increasingly belligerent attitude towards Bersatu after PAS refused to join Umno in taking on Bersatu in the next general election.

"PAS does not want to be involved in any political polemics that could cause a breakup, leading to instability and threats to peace and the people's economic livelihoods.

"PAS is committed to strengthening Muafakat Nasional while also defending Perikatan Nasional (PN)," he said.

Umno, PAS and Bersatu are all part of the coalition government at the federal level but have competing interests.

In the next general election, Umno had hoped that it could join forces with PAS under Muafakat to take on Bersatu.

PAS is in favour of all three parties presenting a united front. To this end, it wants to maintain its Muafakat coalition with Umno while also keeping its PN pact with Bersatu.

Umno and its BN partners have refused to join PN.

Takiyuddin called on PAS' partners in the coalition government to compromise.

"PAS urges its political partners particularly in the government to be open, tolerant and take stock of the past in the interest of the people who need good leaders with integrity," he said.

He added that only a "sincere" unity could help the nation-building process.
