Don't call Lukashenko president: Tsikhanouskaya

"Calling him 'president' shapes the wrong perception among millions of viewers. He is a citizen of Belarus who has illegally usurped presidential power by violence," she said to applause from lawmakers.

Lukashenko claimed a resounding victory in last year's presidential election despite the widely held view that the vote was fraudulent and the poll was followed by a ciolent crackdown on the opposition.

Tsikhanouskaya also told European lawmakers that the EU must do more to isolate Lukashenko and called on governments to ensure that economic sanctions, imposed in July, remain strong.

"Will Europe as a whole have the courage to take decisive action now or will we wait another year? Dear ladies and gentlemen, we don't have another year. Neither does Belarus, neither does Europe," she said.
