Donald Trump’s Classified Documents Trial Delayed Indefinitely

Donald Trump’s trial on charges that he obstructed justice and withheld classified documents has been delayed indefinitely, a federal judge wrote in an order today.

The decision by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon means that it is all the more likely that Trump’s hush money trial may be the only criminal proceeding he faces before the November election. Last year, Trump was indicted four separate times in cases in New York, Florida, Georgia and Washington, D.C.

Cannon wrote that the “finalization of a trial date at this juncture” would be “imprudent and inconsistent with the Court’s duty to fully and fairly consider the various pending pre-trial motions before the Court, critical [Classified Information Procedures Act] issues, and additional pretrial and trial preparations necessary to present this case to a jury.”

The trial in the case was scheduled to start on May 20. Trump’s trial in the New York hush money case is likely to still be ongoing at that time, but Cannon also had indicated that a host of issues also had to be resolved, including those having to do with the use of classified documents in a public proceeding.

Trump faces 40 felony charges related to his retention of classified documents after he left the White House. He has plead not guilty.

Trump also faces a trial on charges that he conspired to overturn the results of the 2020 election and remain in power. But that case also does not have a trial date, as the Supreme Court considers whether Trump had presidential immunity from prosecution on any of the charges. The court heard oral arguments last month.

Also in doubt is when a trial will start in Georgia, where Trump and a host of other defendants face racketeering and other charges related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in that state.
