‘I don’t like to say it’ – Sheringham tells Arsenal they’ve got their top summer target right
Former Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham says he doesn’t “want to see” Declan Rice join Arsenal as he would “make them a better team”.
The West Ham midfielder has consistently put in impressive performances for the Hammers for a few years now, although his form has dipped this season with David Moyes’ side struggling in the Premier League.
West Ham are currently in the Premier League relegation zone with 12 games to play this season and it now looks almost certain that Rice will move on in the summer transfer window.
Rice has a number of suitors but Arsenal and Chelsea are understood to be the main two sides interested in signing him in the next window.
The England international has made it clear that he wants to be playing in the Champions League as soon as possible and Arsenal are definitely in a better position to offer than next season than tenth-placed Chelsea.
There have been rumours it could cost anywhere between £70m and £100m to take Rice away from West Ham in the summer and he justified his price tag once again on Thursday night.
Rice scored as England beat Italy 2-1 in their first Euro 2024 qualifier in Naples with the West Ham midfielder producing a brilliant display.
Speaking about Rice, Sheringham admitted he would be a brilliant signing for Arsenal, he told talkSPORT: “You put him up against other top players and the complete midfield player would be able to defend, tackle, run forward but score goals as well.
“If you add a couple of goals to Declan’s game, maybe not a couple, if you add six or seven goals to Declan Rice’s game with what he’s got at the moment all of a sudden you’re talking about an absolute world beater of a player.
“Wherever he goes he’s going to make that team a better team. Maybe Casemiro is in that role at Manchester United so perhaps they don’t need him.
“But he would definitely make Arsenal a better team. I don’t like to say it but they’re already good enough this season and I don’t want to see Declan go there because he will make them a better team.
“He could walk into any team.”
On whether West Ham should cash in on Rice, Sheringham added: “I think you’ve got to.
“For a club like West Ham, if you think you hold onto him for another season and you don’t get anything for him, to get like £60-80million… I’d put him around that figure.
“If he had three years on his contract you’d probably have to pay £120million to get him out, but he hasn’t.
“He’s stayed at West Ham, he’s been very loyal but I think this summer would probably be the time when they want to cash in and get that £70million for him so they can help get other players in.”
