Domino’s to begin autonomous pizza deliveries in Houston

Yahoo Finance's Sibile Marcellus breaks down the details of Domino’s plan to begin autonomous deliveries in Houston, Texas.

Video transcript

ALEXIS CHRISTOFOROUS: Welcome back to Yahoo Finance Live. Starting this week, some Domino's customers in Houston can have their pizza delivered without ever interacting with a human. The pizza delivery giant has entered a partnership with the autonomous delivery company, Neuro. That's a startup. They're going to allow some select customers to get their pizza to their door via a robot. Sibile Marcellus is here now with all those details. And I was checking out the videos, Sibile. It looks like kind of something out of a sci-fi movie.

SIBILE MARCELLUS: Exactly, a sci-fi movie except that this can happen right now, or, in fact, is starting just this week in Houston, Texas. This is real, people. This company, this self-driving startup called Neuro has partnered with Domino's Pizza. And the way it works is that online, you go to this store in Houston, you order a pizza, and that pizza is transported by a self-driving car with no human being inside. And that robot delivers that pizza to your doorstep. Unbelievable. Domino's is testing it out this week. This is the first time that we're having this type of food delivery with a self-driving car and a robot in Houston ever.

So it'll be very interesting to see how this goes. Domino's is paying very close attention to see, A, how customers react to the robots, if they like their delivery, if the pizza is warm-- it's hot, it's not messed up or anything like that. And also there's some kind of machinery where you hit a touch screen on the robot. That's somehow how you get the pizza. So it'll be very interesting to see how this all works out. Just to note, this company announced it's $500 million Series C round, which was funded by Chipotle, which means that a lot of fast food giants are also going to be very interested if this works out.

ALEXIS CHRISTOFOROUS: Yeah, I mean, if they're putting their money where their mouth is, it means you could soon be getting your Chipotle via a robot as well. Definitely cool. Will we'll keeping an eye on it all. Sibile Marcellus, thank you.
