Dolly Parton Delivers Nothing But Praise For Beyoncé's 'Jolene' Cover
Dolly Parton on Friday showed love to Beyoncé for her new cover of “Jolene.”
The country icon weighed in after Queen Bey delivered her rendition of the classic song on the album “Cowboy Carter,” released earlier in the day.
“Wow, I just heard Jolene. Beyoncé is giving that girl some trouble and she deserves it!” Parton wrote in a sweet message on social media, referring to the woman named in the song’s lyrics.
Parton, who recorded the original version of the tune in 1973, previously hinted that Bey would be unveiling a cover when she spoke with Tennessee’s Knoxville News Sentinel earlier this month.
“I think it’s probably gonna be on her country album, which I’m very excited about that,” she told the outlet.
Beyoncé’s rendition of “Jolene” features changes to the original lyrics.
“Jolene, I’m warnin’ you, woman, find you your own man,” she sings at one point. “Jolene, I know I’m a queen, Jolene. I’m still a Creole banjee bitch from Louisianne.”
She goes on to sing that “there’s a thousand girls in every room that act as desperate” as Jolene.
Parton also joined country stars Linda Martell and Willie Nelson in contributing to interlude tracks on “Cowboy Carter.”
“Hey, Miss Honeybee, it’s Dolly P. You know that hussy with the good hair you sing about?” Parton says on the track “Dolly P,” nodding to Bey’s song “Sorry” from the album “Lemonade.”
“Reminded me of someone I knew back when. Except she has flaming locks of auburn hair,” Parton continues, referencing her lyrics from “Jolene.”
“Bless her heart. Just a hair of a different color, but it hurts just the same.”
“Cowboy Carter” has already smashed records, becoming the most-streamed album in a single day this year on Spotify, the platform announced Friday.
