The House is expected to pass a $1.9 trillion pandemic relief package late Friday that includes $1,400 checks for most Americans and billions of dollars for schools, state and local governments and businesses. A declassified U.S. intelligence assessment released on Friday said Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved the operation against Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a royal insider-turned-critic who was killed at the kingdom's Istanbul consulate in 2018 and his body dismembered. The disclosure poses a fresh challenge to the 35-year-old prince's reputation as the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden places Saudi Arabia's human rights record under close scrutiny. While Riyadh eventually admitted that Khashoggi was killed in a "rogue" extradition operation gone wrong, it has denied any involvement by the crown prince, often known in the West by his initials MbS.
The U.S. Justice Department said on Friday it would investigate a rising wave of hate crimes in the U.S, as Asian Americans have experienced a growing number of racially motivated attacks since former President Donald Trump began referring to COVID-19 as a "China virus."A DOJ official from the Civil Rights division said the office is working with the FBI, federal prosecutors and local police to "evaluate possible hate crimes," without providing further details.Though another official told Reuters the statement was a direct response to the increasing reports of violence against Asian Americans.From March of 2020 to December of last year, there were more than 2,800 reported incidents of anti-Asian hate incidents in the United States, according to Stop AAPI Hate, a coalition that has been collecting data.While verbal harassment has made up more than 70 percent of the incidents, more than 8 percent involved physical assaults.In one such example, a surveillance video that has since gone viral showed a 91-year-old Asian man in Oakland, California, being shoved to the ground in late January.A suspect in the attack was later arrested, and now faces multiple assault charges for a number of Chinatown incidents. Prosecutors are also investigating whether the attacks were racially motivated.

At least five protesters were killed and more than 175 people injured on Friday in clashes between demonstrators and security forces in the southern Iraqi city of Nassiriya, a Reuters witness and other sources said. Among the fatalities, most of the protesters died from bullet wounds, a hospital source said, adding that about 120 protesters were wounded. At least 57 members of the security forces were injured, according to a another hospital source and a security source.

With the NCAA granting all current players an extra year of eligibility, the NBA will shift to a system requiring all players to petition for entry into the 2021 draft. The NCAA approved the extra year of eligibility in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Producers Guild of America has announced nominees for the PGA Awards in the Sports, Children’s and Short Form Program categories, and among the nominees is a special episode of LeBron James’ “The Shop: Uninterrupted” featuring President Barack Obama. Other nominees in the Outstanding Sports Program category included “Hard Knocks: Los Angeles,” “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” “Seeing America with Megan Rapinoe” and “Defying Gravity: The Untold Story of Women’s Gymnastics.” In fact, HBO nearly swept the sports category, landing four of the five nominations in the field (“Defying Gravity” comes from YouTube Originals). Ferrari Formula One boss Mattia Binotto will not attend all races this season, delegating to racing director Laurent Mekies as the team's focus turns to making the most of major rule changes for 2022. The Italian was absent from some grands prix already last year, getting more involved at the Maranello factory as the sport's oldest and most successful team endured their worst season in 40 years and failed to win a race. Binotto said the changes the team faced were so big that, with limits on time and resources, most of the efforts needed to be directed to that.
