On Tuesday night, on the eve of President Joe Biden’s inauguration, Mania Darbani’s mother called her from Iran. She was ecstatic that Biden would soon repeal the Trump administration’s so-called "Muslim ban" that barred people from a number of mostly Muslim-majority nations, including Iran, from coming to the United States. "It means I can get to you very soon," Maryam Taghdissi Jani, who is applying for an immigrant visa, told Darbani, a 36-year-old receptionist who lives with her husband in Los Angeles.
Canadian pension funds are seeking to boost their real estate investments, betting the slumping property market will recover as the COVID-19 pandemic recedes and office workers and city dwellers return to downtown properties. In a world of slower economic growth, very low interest rates, volatility in equity markets, real estate offers an attractive opportunity for pension funds, which take a long-term investment horizon, say market participants.

President Joe Biden’s nominee for secretary of transportation, Pete Buttigieg, is pledging to carry out the administration’s ambitious agenda to rebuild the nation’s infrastructure, calling it a “generational opportunity” to create new jobs, fight economic inequality and stem climate change. “We need to build our economy back, better than ever, and the Department of Transportation can play a central role in this,” the 39-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, intends to tell the Senate Commerce Committee, according to prepared remarks for his confirmation hearing Thursday. A former Democratic presidential rival whom Biden praised for bringing fresh ideas, Buttigieg would be the first openly gay person confirmed by the Senate to a Cabinet post.

If you’re among the 42 million Americans with federal student loan debt, here’s a spot of good news: president Joe Biden has extended forbearance on payments through the end of September. This continues the Covid-19 relief first enacted by former secretary of education Betsy DeVos and then passed by Congress in March of last year, intended to lessen the financial burden faced by Americans during the economic crisis. Research suggests that student loan debt exacerbates the racial wealth gap (pdf): One 2019 study (pdf) found that 20 years after starting school, the median Black borrower still owed $18,500 in federal student loan debt, while the median white borrower owed just $1,000.

The pair advise a couple with food that they should sit or stand to the side rather than walk while eating and remind passers-by that their masks, which are mandatory throughout Brussels, need to cover their noses.
Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday defended a decision to extend a hard lockdown in Germany by two weeks until mid-February, saying it was necessary to slow a new and more aggressive variant of the coronavirus. Speaking at a news conference, Merkel said that while restrictions were showing results in the form of fewer new infections, it would be a mistake to ease curbs given the mutation had been identified in Germany. "Our efforts face a threat and this threat is clearer now than at the start of the year and this is the mutation of the virus," said Merkel.

Merkel added that while new variants of the coronavirus are a major reason for concern, the newly developed vaccines can be relatively quickly adapted to protect people from mutations.
