Doctor Foster star Bertie Carvel says a series 3 return "will be difficult"
Doctor Foster star Bertie Carvel has shared the reason he thinks making a third series of the show may prove to be difficult – and it's all to do with the budget.
The drama – which starred Suranne Jones as the titular medical practitioner whose life spirals out of control – aired for two series between 2015 and 2017, but Carvel believes the popularity of the cast will now create problems in bringing "the band back together" for another run of the series.
For instance, Jones found huge success with Gentleman Jack and Sky One's Save Me, while co-star Jodie Comer hit the big-time with her role in Killing Eve.

The Simon Foster actor recently spoke to The Sun's Bizarre TV column, where he explained (via Female First): "It will be difficult to get the band back together.
"That's the challenge with British TV, there aren't the budgets to keep people in golden handcuffs with such huge options. It was a blessing we were able to do the second and I wasn't too busy at that stage.
"The further we go in time, everybody's career is doing very nicely," he continued. "You have to make a big investment in something in order to make it an endlessly returnable series."

A third Doctor Foster outing has been on the mind of many fans for three years now, and writer Mike Bartlett recently admitted to Digital Spy that a return is fully dependent on whether they can crack the right story.
"It all depends on the story. Only when I have the right idea and story for it. The reason we could do two quite quickly, although it was still two years later, is I knew what it was," he said.
"What I wonder is whether it needs a bit of time now. I just think I'll know, the right story at the right time. It could not come back. But we might come back in 60 years."
