Two men have been jailed after they decapitated the pet dog of a former partner and impaled its head on a door handle.

Ashley Grundy, 31, and Steven Robinson, 39, cut the head off a Yorkshire Terrier called Bailey and dumped its body in Chorley, Lancashire, on 19 May 2018.

Grundy had a row with his then partner at the Baron's Rest pub that evening, causing her to end the relationship, and her dog went missing from her home in Whittle-Le-Woods the same night.

Grundy and Robinson had driven to her house, stolen the pet and returned to the pub where they decapitated the dog, Preston Crown Court heard last Friday.

They dumped the dog’s body at the pub and left its head on the handle of a house where the victim’s mother lived, leaving her and her child to make the horrific discovery the next day.

CCTV showed Robinson discarding an item that had been wrapped in a car mat into a bush - it was later found to be Bailey's decapitated body.

Prosecutors said the men's actions were "intended to cause maximum fear to the victims".

Grundy, from Kirkham, and Robinson, from Lancaster, were jailed for 19 months for criminal damage and outraging public decency.

They were also given a three-year restraining order, prohibiting both of them from contacting Grundy's ex-partner, her mother or entering their street.

Joanne Close, senior crown prosecutor, said: “This is an extremely disturbing case in which a family pet’s head was gruesomely displayed on the front door of another family’s home, to be discovered by a child who was understandably traumatised by the discovery.

"I hope that all those affected by their cruel and disgusting actions will be reassured that they have been brought to justice and will now face the consequences of their crimes.”

Sergeant Paul Harrison of Lancashire Police said: “This was a lengthy investigation which involved a number of officers.

"Officers sat through hours of CCTV and had to go through distressing incidents to compare the DNA from Bailey’s head and carcass to the DNA of the blood found in and on the vehicle that Grundy and Robinson were using.

"I'd like to thank all the officers involved who worked tirelessly to bring this investigation to a conclusion.

"I now hope that this can give some closure to the victim who lost a beloved pet due to the barbaric act of these two individuals.”
