Diddy’s Attorney Joins Luigi Mangione’s Defense Team
The defense attorney for Sean “Diddy” Combs appears to be taking on another high-profile suspect as a client: Luigi Mangione.
The revelation emerged just after the 26-year-old Mangione touched down in New York City on Thursday to face a charge of first-degree murder for the slaying of 50-year-old UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione was paraded in front of news cameras as police escorted him into a courthouse where the famous Diddy attorney Marc Agnifilo was also spotted walking inside by CNN.
Agnifilo, 60, will have a familiar face on his team. His lawyer wife, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, has been serving as Mangione’s counsel since the weekend, back when Mangione was still being held at a Pennsylvania detention center.
A source told CNN that Mangione met with his attorneys on Thursday afternoon before he made his initial appearance inside the New York federal courthouse.
The power couple may be facing an uphill battle in defending Mangione. The murder suspect has had damning evidence stack up against him, including the alleged discovery of a ghost gun and false IDs in his possession at the time of his shock McDonald’s arrest on Dec. 9 in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Unsealed records alleged Thursday that Mangione chronicled his outrage at Thompson and his disdain for medical insurers in a journal. His writings about targeting an insurance CEO went back as far as August, authorities said.
“The target is insurance,” he wrote in the summer, according to an affidavit viewed by the New York Post. He allegedly added that UnitedHealthcare “checks every box” for the sort of target he sought.
In October, Mangione allegedly wrote that he hoped to “wack” a CEO at one of the companies attending an investor conference that was coming up “in six weeks.” Thompson was shot dead on Dec. 4 as he walked on a sidewalk in front of the Midtown Hilton—where he was scheduled to give a speech to investors that morning.
Friedman Agnifilo, 58, is plenty experienced in New York courts. She is a former prosecutor at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office who switched judicial sides to join her husband’s firm in 2021.
“She’s got as much experience as any human being, especially in the state court,” a former colleague of Friedman Agnifilo’s told CNN. “She knows every corridor, every judge, every clerk in the courthouse.”
Agnifilo is no stranger to high-profile clients himself. He famously served as Harvey Weinstein’s defense team. His work on that case in 2017 forced Friedman Agnifilo to recuse herself as a Weinstein prosecutor at the time.
