Today, on the second day of October and about three decades into the long year that is 2020, Twitter users woke up to—or were awoken by—news that President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for COVID-19, the virus that has so far killed more than 207,000 Americans and more than one million people across the globe.
"We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately," Trump wrote in a tweet. "We will get through this TOGETHER!"
The 74-year-old president, who falls into a high-risk category for the disease, has long downplayed the pandemic and, on multiple occasions, has advised the use of hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 salve (even though it's a drug the FDA has recommended against using). Now, his diagnosis adds fuel to the presidential race, raising unprecedented questions just a month before Election Day on November 3.
Naturally, a lot of people either lost sleep at the announcement, or made their loved ones lose sleep by waking them up to the news. If a plot twist this big arrives in the middle of the night, do you disturb your partner's slumber, or let them sleep in peace? It seems a lot of tweeters went for the former.

would you have woken your sweetly sleeping spouse up to tell them the news?💀— Emily Gould (@EmilyGould) October 2, 2020
Trump's infection follows news that Hope Hicks, one of the president's closest advisers, also tested positive for COVID-19. She reportedly traveled with him several times this week. Ronna McDaniel, the chairwoman of the Republican National Committee who was seen with Trump last week, also tested positive.
Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence tested negative for the virus. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, who just Tuesday shared the same debate stage with Trump, and his wife, Jill Biden, tested negative for the virus today. As the Trumps will most likely be quarantined for at least two weeks, the remaining presidential debates will likely be postponed or canceled.
