“It really is like they say,” says narrator Michael C. Hall at the top of the clip. “Your life flashes before your eyes.” It’s an apt setup for the forthcoming prequel series, as we watch a deceased (or so we thought?) adult Dexter get wheeled away to an emergency room. As he remains in limbo, his brain starts kicking up memories of his very first days at Miami Metro P.D. Enter Christian Slater’s Harry discussing “the code” with his young son (played by Shadow and Bone‘s Patrick Gibson), while Dexter hunts down the first of his victims that have somehow escaped justice. And as he learns on the job via Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Tanya Martin, the CSI Chief and his new boss: “Spatter matters,” in more ways than one.

The spinoff is set in the 1990s and is centered on a younger version of the serial-killer character played by Hall in the original series. (Hall will also star in another spinoff, Dexter: Resurrection.) Per Original Sin‘s official description, young Dexter is unable to control his “bloodthirsty urges” and must learn to “channel his inner darkness.” (See the first photos from Original Sin here.)

Joining Gibson are Molly Brown (Billions) as his sister Deb and Slater (Mr. Robot) as his adoptive father. The cast also includes Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy), James Martinez (Love, Victor), Christina Milian (Grandfathered), Alex Shimizu (The Blacklist) and Reno Wilson (Good Girls).
