Destructive Tornado Rips Through Southern New Jersey

A damaging tornado traveled through southern New Jersey on September 1, as the remnants of Hurricane Ida brought severe weather along the East Coast.

This footage, taken by Timothy Sloan, shows a funnel cloud ripping through Sewell, which is several miles south of the Philadelphia-Camden metro region.

Several homes in nearby Mullica Hill were leveled by the tornado, according to local media.

On Wednesday evening, New Jersey Gov Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency. “We will use every resource at our disposal to ensure the safety of New Jerseyans,” he tweeted. “Stay off the roads, stay home, and stay safe.” Credit: Timothy Sloan via Storyful
