KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Putrajaya has decided to give state Education Departments the discretion to decide whether or not to order schools to close if the temperature continues to climb.

Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying said the decision will be based on temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celcius for three days in a row.

“According to our guidelines, as long as the temperature exceeds 37 degrees, the state education departments will monitor and close the schools,” she told reporters after a visit to four primary schools in Alor Setar, Kedah today.

Malay Mail received a copy of the audio recording of Lim’s remarks.

She said the Education Ministry and the respective state Education Departments will continue to monitor the situation amid the current heat wave in the country.

The Education Ministry has so far said that all students and teachers can wear appropriate sports attire during the hot weather to avoid any health complications.
