Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz Snubs Trump Over Possible Administration Role
Florida Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz on Tuesday shut down rumors that he could sign onto Donald Trump’s upcoming presidential administration.
A Monday CNN report had said that Moskowitz was a favorite to become the president-elect’s pick to head the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which would have made him the highest-ranking Democrat in Trump’s administration.
Moskowitz has now made it clear, though, that he isn’t interested in holding that title.
“I appreciate the speculation but I am staying in Congress and running for re-election,” he wrote on X. “It’s an honor to serve the people of Florida’s 23rd district.”
“To be clear, nothing was ever offered,” he added in a separate post.
Three unnamed sources with knowledge of Trump’s thinking on administration picks had told CNN that Moskowitz was in the mix.
Representatives for Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to the Daily Beast’s request for comment on the situation.
Despite being a Democrat, Moskowitz had aligned himself with Republicans in the past and had extensive experience in disaster management.
For two years he was Florida’s director of emergency management under Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, leading the state’s response to Hurricane Michael in 2018 and the start of the COVID pandemic in 2020.
His bio on X dubs himself a “Master of Disaster.”
Moskowitz has also signaled support for one of Trump’s top allies, billionaire Elon Musk. He was the first Democrat to publicly pledge to sign onto the House caucus for the Department of Government Efficiency, the thus-unofficial agency Trump invented for Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead.
