Dem Lawmaker Points To Moment That ‘Brought Me Right Back Down To Earth’ After Debate High
Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) has described a conversation that sent her tumbling back to reality following her initial high from Democratic nominee Kamala Harris’ performance in Tuesday’s debate against Donald Trump.
Dingell had been “ecstatic like every other Democrat” while watching Harris get under Trump’s skin on the debate stage, she admitted to CNN’s Kasie Hunt on Thursday. Trump, meanwhile, showed viewers exactly who he is, she said. Even conservative pundits torched Trump’s poor showing.
But Dingell’s early Wednesday morning phone call with a township supervisor about the debate “brought me right back down to Earth,” the lawmaker said.
The supervisor, with whom Dingell said she was close, noted how Trump managed to remain on message on the theme of immigration, which resonated with many voters.
Dingell didn’t go into more detail on the exchange, which obviously served as a reality check that led her to declare that November’s vote was “Just closer than people realize.”
