New Delhi residents demand shifting of landfill

STORY: Locals complained of coughing after smoke started to come out of the Bhalswa landfill, which reignited after a lull of a few weeks. They have asked the authorities to remove the landfill away from the residential area as it is causing health issues to nearby residents.

The towering landfill catches frequent fires in the summer months. Landfill gases, which include highly inflammable gases like 'Methane', add fuel to the fire.

Fire tenders have been trying to douse the fire but because of persistent high temperatures and heatwave conditions in the northern part of the country, their efforts have failed to put it down.

Fires in Delhi's dump yards also contribute to the toxic air in the world's most polluted capital.
