Delhi Residents Celebrate Diwali With Fireworks Despite Ban

Hazardous air quality levels were recorded in areas of Delhi, India, on November 5, the day after Diwali, despite a ban on the use of fireworks during celebrations of the holiday, NDTV reported.

Speaking to local media, a representative of the India Meteorological Department said, “Overall air quality is in ‘severe’ category today after bursting of firecrackers on Diwali and presence of bio-mass pollutants in Delhi.”

Officials had forecast air quality levels to reach a “severe” level if firecrackers were widely used on the holiday, the Hindustan Times said. Some residents “complained of itchy throat and watery eyes,” the report said.
