New Delhi observes weekend curfew as COVID spirals

On Friday (January 7), New Delhi reported a massive surge of 17,335 new cases, including 48 cases of Omicron variant, and a positivity rate of 17.73 percent.

Public transportation and essential services remained open during the weekend curfew but the low frequency of public buses and metro trains troubled commuters.

India's southern Karnataka state also imposed a weekend lockdown to curb the infection spread.

India reported 141,986 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, the most since the end of May 2021.

India’s COVID-19 death toll currently stands at 483,463.
