Dean McDermott is hopeful he can rebuild his relationships with his kids now that he's sober.

Opening up to the Daily Mail for the first time since completing rehab and since his separation from Tori Spelling, the actor, 56, admitted he "isolated" himself from his kids as his drinking worsened in recent years.

"I just isolated more and more and more and she isolated with the kids. We were roommates," he says of his relationship with the Beverly Hills, 90210 alum, 50.

"Rarely, rarely, rarely did we eat together. We'd sit down and have a family meal but it was always disjointed," he shared.

"It made me feel worse because I knew I was a big part of [the problem] and I was at a place where I felt there was nothing I could do about it."

McDermott also shared in the interview that he hasn't seen their children — Beau, 6, Finn, 11, Hattie, 12, Stella, 15, and Liam, 16 — since the family went their separate ways after moving out of the Pasadena rental they called home in June.

McDermott announced the couple's split in June after 18 years together, noting in a later-deleted social media post that the pair "have decided to go our separate ways" and "start a new journey of our own."

"We will continue to work together as loving parents and guide and love our children through this difficult time," he continued. "We ask that you all respect our privacy as we take this time to surround our family with love and work our way through this. Thank you all for your support and kindness. 🙏."

While Spelling has yet to publicly address the status of her relationship with McDermott, sources previously told PEOPLE that the couple seemed to be doing well before her husband's announcement.

"Their friends have seen their ups and downs through the years, but they really did seem to be in a good place in recent months,” a source close to Spelling told PEOPLE. “This feels really out of the blue."

Referencing the past struggles in their relationships, the source continued, "If this had happened a year ago, it would’ve been expected because things were terrible between them. Sure, they still had their disagreements and didn’t always see eye to eye, but the past six months things had felt good between them.”
