“Deadpool & Wolverine” claws its way to $396 million in 2nd week, “Trap” opens to $15.6 million

The third Deadpool film has already outgrossed the first two and is nearing $1 billion worldwide.

The death of the superhero blockbuster has been, well, mildly exaggerated as Deadpool & Wolverine retains the top spot at the box office in its second week, bringing in an impressive $97 million for a domestic total so far of $395.6 million.

Internationally, the film earned another $110.5 million for a worldwide box office of $824.1 million, making the threequel the second highest grossing film of the year, behind Inside Out 2. Both films are from Disney, meaning the House of Mouse just added a new wing.

While Inside Out 2 is very family friendly, Deadpool & Wolverine is decidedly not and the latter is now the 3rd highest grossing R-rated film of all-time (behind Joker and Oppenheimer). And adding to its list of wins, the Ryan Reynolds-Hugh Jackman superbuddy comedy has already outgrossed the first two Deadpool films.

As the only Marvel Cinematic Universe release this year, after a slew of disappointing entries, Deadpool & Wolverine could either be a harbinger of good things for the future of superhero cinema or just simply the beginning of the end.

Meanwhile, Twisters is still enjoying the Hot Glen Summer, coming in second and grossing $22.7 million in its third week of release for a domestic cume of $195.6 million ($274.4 million worldwide).

The Great Hartnett Resurgence continues with Trap, directed by M. Night Shyamalan and starring Josh Hartnett as a father/serial killer, who accompanies his teen daughter to a pop concert that's really just a front to catch his murderous alter ego, The Butcher. The thriller opened to $15.6 million domestically, with another $4.4 million internationally, for a global weekend of $20 million.

For the film, Shyamalan created a real concert with his daughter, R&B singer-songwriter Saleka Shyamalan, as the fictional pop star Lady Raven, which he says was "part of the joy" and "complexity" of making the film.

"Behind Josh, there's a real concert going on, and the extras are reacting to that," the director told Entertainment Weekly. "It took months and months to think about that, with Saleka and I analyzing who this woman is and how she would put on a show. All of the crew members really got into, 'Let's put this on for real.' I mean, I'm live directing the cameras on the stage that are putting her on the big screens. There isn't any CGI."

Rounding out the top 5, Despicable Me 4 earned $11.3 million in its fifth week of release, for a domestic total of $314 million ($752.2 million worldwide) and eight weeks in, Inside Out 2 took in $6.7 million, extending its box office run to $626.9 million and a cool $1.6 billion worldwide.

Deadpool & Wolverine has its work cut out for it if it's going to take out the year's top film, but then again, it's only been two weeks. Let's see if these heroes have legs.
