David Moyes has said that Jesse Lingard is in ‘really good condition’ as the free agent continues to train with West Ham United.

Several clubs have considered offering the former England international a contract, including the Hammers and Wolverhampton Wanderers, but he remains without a club as it stands.

Lingard has already played for West Ham once, having spent the second half of the 2020-21 season on loan at the London Stadium. He put in some excellent performances under Moyes, scoring nine goals and making five assists in 16 games, helping the London club qualify for the Europa League.

The Hammers attempted to sign Lingard permanently that summer, but he ultimately remained at Man Utd.

Moyes’ team were once again linked with the 30-year-old when his contract with the Red Devils came to an end last summer. Lingard ultimately opted to reject their advances and sign for Nottingham Forest instead.

He struggled at the City Ground, though, and now finds himself without a club once again. It has emerged that Moyes is eager to bring Lingard back to West Ham, but only if he can prove himself in training first.

Wolves are also considering offering Lingard a new deal, though, so they could potentially swoop in at the last minute for him.

Moyes has now given his verdict on Lingard’s progression in training, and it’s fair to say he’s very pleased with the former Man Utd man. He refused to say whether or not West Ham would sign him, though.

“Jesse has trained with us for three weeks and he’s improved greatly from when he first came in,” Moyes told talkSPORT.

“He’s in really good condition – much better condition than he was when he first came in.

“I have to say, when Jesse joined us two years ago I think he scored nine goals in 15 games and was probably the difference between us getting into Europe for the first time.

“I want to give him every opportunity to get himself back in condition and see how he does.

“So there’s no real update on it at the moment, just to say that he’s back and getting much closer to the levels of fitness where you’d hope he would be.”

Despite Wolves’ interest, West Ham are still the favourites to sign Lingard. It will be interesting to see if they do offer him a new contract in the next couple of weeks.
