Buildings were destroyed near Mill City, Oregon, as the Santiam wildfire swept through the region on Tuesday, September 8. The fire temporarily forced the closure of Interstate 5, one of two main vehicular routes through the region, reports said.
Local media quoted Marion County Commissioner Kevin Cameron as saying that a “fire storm” had hit areas north of the Santiam River.
Previously known as the Beachie Creek Fire, the Santiam Fire forced the evacuation of Mill City and other parts of Marion County early on Tuesday morning, while inmates from three prisons were relocated due to the blazes. A state of emergency was declared in the county.
Oregon Gov Kate Brown called the statewide blazes an “unprecedented,” life-threatening fire event. As of Tuesday evening, there was no containment of the Santiam Fire.
