Authorities in New Hampshire are investigating the death of a Dartmouth College student whose body was found in a river after he went missing.

Won Jang, 20, was last seen by witnesses on Boathouse Road by the docks on the Connecticut River in Hanover, N.H., around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, according to a press release from the Hanover Police Department. The next day, around 3:15 p.m., authorities responded to the scene to investigate and dive teams searched the river.

At about 7:30 p.m., a body was recovered approximately 65 feet offshore, police said. The body was later identified as Jang, whose cause of death has yet to be determined by the local medical examiner’s office, according to the release.

Police said in the release that the “preliminary investigation has revealed that foul play is not suspected” and that the investigation is ongoing.

According to WMUR-TV, Dartmouth College said that Jang was last seen at a social gathering before disappearing. Hanover Police Chief Charles Dennis told the station, as well as local outlets WPTZ and WCAX-TV, that hazing may have been involved in Jang’s death.

“There is some evidence of alcohol involved, certainly from witnesses and talking with things like that,” the chief told WMUR-TV. “Again, that's all part of our investigation. We did receive an anonymous email this morning through the college that there may be some hazing involved, so we certainly will look into that aspect, too.”

PEOPLE reached out to Chief Dennis for comment on Tuesday, July 9 but did not immediately hear back.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Jang was pursuing a bachelor’s degree in bioengineering and biomedical engineering at Dartmouth College. The profile states he was expected to graduate in June 2026 and was a member of the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity.

Dartmouth College, an Ivy League school, issued a statement expressing condolences to Jang's loved ones and support for the campus community.

Dartmouth College did not immediately return PEOPLE’s request for comment on Jang’s death and the alleged hazing incident.

Hanover police asked anyone with information regarding the case to call the department at 603-643-2222.
