Danny DeVito Says “It's Always Sunny” Cast Gets 'a Little Wild' in “Abbott Elementary” Crossover: 'Going to Be Fun' (Exclusive)
"It's such an odd mix, so it's going to be fun," DeVito tells PEOPLE
Danny DeVito is teasing an upcoming crossover between two beloved sitcoms.
Speaking with PEOPLE at the Los Angeles premiere of Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, DeVito opened up about the upcoming crossover between Pennsylvania-set comedies It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary casts. Although the actor can only offer minimal details on the television event, he says the audience will love it just as much as the cast loved filming.
“We had a great time,” DeVito, 79, tells PEOPLE. “They're wonderful people. It's such an odd mix, so it's going to be fun.”
The Batman Returns shared that there are “lots of surprises,” and joked, “I think we get a little wild in the show for them, but they're handling us pretty well.”

Earlier this month, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and creator Rob McElhenney announced the crossover with a photo posted on social media. The snap showed McElhenney, Charlie Day and Quinta Brunson posing in front of the iconic Abbott Elementary school.
Among the series of photos was a larger cast photo, which showed McElhenney, Day and Brunson with DeVito and Abbott stars Tyler James Williams and William Stanford Davis. The group stood with their arms crossed near the doors of the school with the “Willard R. Abbott Public School” sign in the background.
“Oh. Hello,” he captioned the post.
Hulu then commented on the post, confirming the news. “The gang goes to Abbott Elementary,” the streamer said.
Fans went wild seeing the trio together, with a follower writing, “BIGGEST CROSSOVER EVENT OF THE YEAR.”
One person joked, “This crossover has the potential to cure some kind of infectious disease. Not sure which one, but the potential is there.”
“The best cross over EVER!!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!” commented another.
Brunson had also teased the crossover during an appearance at ComicCon in July but didn’t hint at the possibility of it being with the It’s Always Sunny cast.
“We will be doing an interesting crossover this season… but I’m not going to tell you with who or with what or where or when or how,” Brunson said at the time. “But it’s really exciting, and I think it’ll change television as we know it.”
The Abbott Elementary creator later told Variety she felt inspired by her love for the Disney Channel crossover episodes with That’s So Raven, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Hannah Montana. She, therefore, wanted to incorporate that into her own projects.
“Those things are what reinvigorate TV viewers, TV watchers, and I think it’s always fun to find ways to reinvigorate our audiences,” she said, adding, “I just live for those kind of magic moments, and I'm excited to be able to bring one to TV with Abbott."
Season 16 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadephia premiered in the summer of 2023 and can now be streamed on Hulu, while Abbott Elementary airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC and can be streamed on Hulu the next day.
