Daniel Day-Lewis Returns to Acting for a Movie Directed by His Son After Previously Announcing Retirement

The Oscar winner previously indicated he was retiring from his acting career back in 2017

Daniel Day-Lewis is back in action.

The three-time Oscar winner, 67, who announced his retirement from acting in 2017, is set to star in a new film directed by his artist son Ronan, 26, Focus Features confirmed to PEOPLE.

Ronan's directorial debut is titled Anemone and also stars Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley and Safia Oakley-Green.

Day-Lewis and his son also co-wrote the movie, which "explores the intricate relationships between fathers, sons and brothers, and the dynamics of familial bonds," per a press release.

In a statement, Focus Features Chairman Peter Kujawski said, "We could not be more excited to partner with a brilliant visual artist in Ronan Day-Lewis on his first feature film alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative collaborator. They have written a truly exceptional script, and we look forward to bringing their shared vision to audiences alongside the team at Plan B."

A rep for Day-Lewis previously shared news of his retirement in June 2017, months before his last movie, Phantom Thread, released in theaters. He also received a Best Actor Oscar nomination for that film.

“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years," his rep said at the time. "This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject."

Day-Lewis is the first to win three Oscars in the Best Actor category, having taken home the honor for Lincoln (2012) as well as There Will Be Blood (2007) and My Left Foot (1989).

Since stepping away from the spotlight, the actor has been spotted out and about on rare occasions and even showed up to honor longtime collaborator Martin Scorsese at the National Board of Review Awards Gala  in January.

The star, who is married to wife Rebecca Miller, has three kids: Ronan, plus Gabriel-Kane, 29, and Cashel Blake, 22.

While speaking with ScreenDaily in March, Jim Sheridan — the director with whom Day-Lewis made the movies My Left Foot (1989), In the Name of the Father (1993) and The Boxer (1997) — said he would like to work with Day-Lewis again, while speaking to the health of the overall film industry.

“He says he’s done, I keep talking to him,” said Sheridan, 75. “I’d love to do something with him again. He’s like everybody else: He opens up the streamers and there’s 7,000 choices, [and] none of them are good."

"Film has been moved out of the public domain into a private domain — you have a remote, you can stop it," Sheridan added to ScreenDaily. "It’s not the same experience. It’d be great to see Daniel coming back and doing something, 'cause he’s so good.”
