A father is speaking out after his 12-year-old daughter died in a Massachusetts house fire on Saturday.

Jasmine Lane was found dead inside the home after the fire was knocked down at the home on Pearl Street in Middleborough early Saturday morning, according to a news release from Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz.

The girl was being watched by her grandparents while her parents were on a Caribbean cruise, according to ABC affiliate WCVB-TV and FOX affiliate WFXT-TV.

Jasmine’s parents have since returned home from their trip, which was cut short when they learned of the deadly blaze.

“We don't know what happened,” Jasmine’s father Jim Lane told WCVB-TV.

Heavy fire was coming from both the first and second floors of the home when crews arrived at the scene around 2 a.m. local time, Cruz said. First responders attempted to gain access to the building and rescue the girl who was trapped, but were unable to do so due to the flames.

Jim described his late daughter as “the smartest, loving, charismatic person” who “loved her family and friends,” according to WFXT-TV. He said she wanted to be a babysitter and enjoyed cheerleading.

“She had so much potential," Jim told reporters Monday, "and for this to happen, our hearts are broken into a million pieces."

Meanwhile, a 59-year-old man and a female child were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment, per Cruz’s statement. Their conditions have not been released.

The fire is believed to have started on the second floor where a device was charging, according to WCVB-TV, citing sources. The station did not describe what kind of device was allegedly involved.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Cruz said on Monday.
