This has year has certainly come with its challenges, especially for the hospitality industry. But one Ohio restaurant is feeling hopeful after a customer’s generous gift last week.

On Nov. 22, a diner paid a visit to Nighttown restaurant in Cleveland and ordered a single beer costing $7.02. Before heading out, he handed his credit card to the restaurant owner, Brendan Ring, and asked him to share the tip with his waitstaff.

“As he walked out I looked down at the tip and realized he left a whopping $3000 tip on a single beer purchase,” Ring wrote in a Facebook post. “I ran after him and he said ‘No mistake we will see you when you reopen!’”

Ring said he was touched by the kind act. “Unbelievable but symbolic of the kind of quality folks we have [known] at Nighttown all these years,” he said. “All my waitstaff and myself [are] humbly grateful for this incredibly kind and grand gesture.”

Ring made the decision to temporarily close his restaurant due to rising COVID-19 cases. “It’s going to be a hard winter in the restaurant business,” he told News 5.

But he made the tough call with his loyal customers, like the person who left the large tip, in mind. “That’s what made it even more difficult for me to make the decision to hit the pause button here again until the complications are sort of under control,” he said. “That gentleman that left a tip yesterday, he’d be indicative of the type of customer we have here in Cleveland Heights. Just true, loyal, and giving.”

Heather Sandow, a bartender at the restaurant who was one of four waitstaff working when the person left the tip, said that his kind gesture was not about the money.

“I think personally, it’s more about the gesture that was made and the unselfishness that was demonstrated,” Sandow said. “The customers have been coming here over the years… they do care about us.”

Little acts of kindness go a long way, especially as we see 2020 come to a close. Who else is feeling inspired to give back, especially on Giving Tuesday?
