Offering big cinematic pictures, immersive sound and built-in Ambilight lounge lighting, Philips 50-inch 9-series 4K LED TV is more than just a 4K telly upgrade, it’s a full blown sensory experience - and this week it’s available with a healthy £101 off the regular list price.

Philips tells me that once buyers have lived with an Ambilight telly, they don’t go back.

Eight out of 10 Ambilight owners will only consider upgrading their screen to another Ambilight model, I was reliably informed, which may well be true if the comments from Currys PC World buyers are anything to go by.

Ambilight, in case you’ve not come across it before, is a smart lighting system built into the set itself. Philips has been making Ambilight sets for decades, but these days it’s fully integrated into the set’s connected smart home system. If you have a Philips Hue smart lighting system, Ambilight can be sync’d with them.

Tiny LED lights around the rear outside edge of the set cast coloured lights onto the surrounding wall. These lights can sync to colours on-screen, almost extending the image beyond the TV, or simply throw a flat white, red, green or blue mood light behind the screen. I think it enhances general TV viewing, and sports in particular.

Obviously if there are some shows you’d rather not embellish with a jazzy light show, it can be turned off.

Why we love it

The PUS9005 doesn’t disappoint when it comes to sound and vision. Philips highly-rated P5 picture engine delivers a hyper sharp image with excellent colour and contrast. The TV supports all the various flavours of HDR in use right now, including Dolby Vision and HDR10+, and even has Dolby Atmos sound built-in.

Naturally it’s also smart in a connected sense. The PUS9005 uses the Android TV platform, so you can be sure there are plenty of big name streaming apps available to download from the Google Play store, as well as Freeview Play for catch-up TV services. It works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa voice control.
