Cumbre Vieja Volcano Shoots Lava Into Air on Spanish Island

Ash and lava continued erupting from a volcano on the island of La Palma in Spain’s Canary Islands, on September 23, four days after such activity was first recorded on Sunday.

Some 6,000 residents have already been forced to flee as lava flows claimed hundreds of homes on the island.

Scientists with the European Space Agency’s Copernicus program forecast that toxic sulfur dioxide gas emitted by the volcano will reach the Iberian Peninsula later this week.
