  • According to The Crown’s resident royal historian, Robert Lacey, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie may become more active participants of the royal family following the exit of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

  • “If two go out, two have got to come in, and those two have got to be Beatrice and Eugenie,” Lacey told Hello! magazine.

The Crown's go-to royal historian, Robert Lacey, has a theory of who could step in for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's royal duties.

According to Lacey, it's possible Queen Elizabeth may be looking to her granddaughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie to take on a more active role and carry out royal duties following Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s joint decision to no longer work as royals.

“It’s quite clear that one of the consequences is that Beatrice and Eugenie will now be brought forward—if they’re willing to be brought forward,” Lacey told Hello! magazine. “If two go out, two have got to come in, and those two have got to be Beatrice and Eugenie. I’m sure they will step forward and be greatly welcomed.”

Beatrice and Eugenie—the daughters of Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, and Sarah, Duchess of York—were allegedly examples Prince Harry cited to the queen, demonstrating how he and Meghan envisioned a more pared-down, low-profile life. The exact conversation had between the Duke of Sussex and the queen remains unknown however, and the public won't know any certain details of Beatrice and Eugenie's roles until confirmed and announced by the sovereign.

“It’s what the family needs as it’s another 15 years before Prince George’s generation steps up,” continued Lacey. “It’s ironic that Harry mentioned his cousins as models of how he wants to be.”

Harry and Meghan announced their plans to step down as senior members of the royal family earlier this month. After days of deliberation between Harry and the remaining senior members of the royal family, the queen expressed her approval of the Sussexes stepping down.

“I recognize the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life,” said the queen in a statement. “It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life.”
