Crown adds new charge for girl, 14, accused of setting classmate on fire at Saskatoon high school
The teenage girl accused of seriously injuring a classmate by lighting her on fire at Evan Hardy Collegiate in Saskatoon is facing a new charge.
The Crown added a charge of "unlawfully causing bodily harm" in connection to injuries suffered by a second victim, a man involved in the Sept. 5 incident. Judge Doug Agnew also granted the Crown's request for a publication ban on identifying the man connected to the new charge.
The 14-year-old accused now faces four charges. She is also charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and arson.
The teen was not present in Saskatoon provincial court Wednesday morning when the Crown added the new charge. She remains in custody and her next scheduled court appearance is Sept. 26.
The accused cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act and the victim's name is also subject to a publication ban.
The violent incident happened during the first week of school earlier this month. Police say the 14-year-old girl allegedly poured liquid on a 15-year-old classmate and lit her on fire over the noon hour.
Students interviewed by CBC News said one student witness yelled, "Fire!" alerting teachers and other staff who rushed to the scene, using jackets and other materials to extinguish the flames.
The alleged attacker was taken into custody by a school resource officer after the incident.
The victim was taken to Royal University Hospital and then transported to Edmonton. She remains in hospital. Relatives have said the teen faces a long period of recovery.
