Crowd Cheers as Trevi Fountain Refills Following Climate Protest

Bystanders in Rome cheered as clean water poured into the Trevi Fountain after climate protesters poured “vegetable charcoal” into the historic landmark on Sunday, May 21.

Footage posted by Roberto Gualtieri, the mayor of Rome, shows the conclusion of cleaning work carried out at the fountain following the protest.

Ultima Generazione said eight of their activists poured the black substance into the Trevi Fountain as part of their “Let’s Not Pay for Fossil” campaign, calling on the Italian government to stop investing in fossil fuels.

Gualtieri said 300,000 liters of water was wasted due to the protest. The fountain was not damaged. Credit: Roberto Gualtieri via Storyful
