Sunbeam Products has issued a recall on Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers after users reported burns while using the product in pressure cooker mode.

The US Consumer Products Safety Commission said the issue is that the cooker can "pressurize when the lid is not fully locked" resulting in burns via hot food and liquids. Sunbeam Products said it has received 119 reports of lid detachment so far, which have resulted in 99 burn injuries, ranging from first-degree to third-degree burns.

The recall specifically involves those Crock-Pots with the model number SCCPPC600-V1 (you can find the model number of your product on bottom of the unit). The cookers were made between July 1, 2017, and October 1, 2018, and have the date codes K196JN through K365JN and L001JN through L273JN. They were sold at retailers like Walmart, Target, and Amazon for $70-$100. The CPSC believes that around 914,430 were sold in the U.S. and around 28,330 were sold in Canada. Crock-Pot issued a recall on its own site and said, in part:

We’ve made two changes to enhance our consumers’ experience with this product, based on their feedback. First, we developed a new lid with updated iconography and quick-reference instructions to help avoid these common misuses. Second, we made design changes to the new lid that prohibit the unit from starting unless the lid is properly secured.

"Crock-Pot is committed to the safety of those who use and love our products," they continued, "and we sincerely apologize to those who may have experienced any inconvenience."

If you have one of the recalled Crock-Pots, you should stop using it in pressure cooker mode immediately, but you can still continue to use it safely for slow cooking and sautéing, according to the alert. Those with the affected units can contact Crock-Pot to get a free replacement lid. You can call them at 800-323-9519 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or you can go to recall.crockpot.com and get more information.
