Chelsea are reportedly keen to end Cristiano Ronaldo’s woes but may struggle to get a deal over the line due to Manchester United’s stance on the issue.
Ronaldo, 37, has probably kicked his last ball for the Red Devils after the sensational interview with Piers Morgan. In it, the former Real Madrid forward said he felt ‘betrayed’ by United. And he also lifted the lid on his relationship with manager Erik ten Hag, suggesting he has ‘no respect’ for the Dutchman.
The interview stemmed from the fact Ronaldo has largely been overlooked this season, with Ten Hag preferring to place him on the bench.
Things came to a head when the goalscoring legend refused to come on as a substitute in United’ 2-0 triumph over Tottenham.
Ronaldo headed down the tunnel before the match had concluded, prompting a great deal of negative media attention.
And things have now been ramped up to a new level after his revelations on Piers Morgan Uncensored.
The ex-Juventus ace tried to engineer a move away from the Theatre of Dreams last summer. That failed to materialise but he might now get his wish.
And The Mirror are reporting that Chelsea are eager to take him to Stamford Bridge should his contract be terminated.
That would certainly be a solution for all concerned. However, United could easily refuse to play ball over that particular move.
Ronaldo Chelsea switch may be blocked
Manchester United seemed content to let Ronaldo leave in the January transfer window. However, they made it clear they would not sell to a direct Premier League rival.
The Blues certainly fall into that category, with the clubs expected to fight it out for a place in next season’s Champions League.
United clearly want rid of the veteran. But if they do opt to sack the superstar striker, then they will have no say on where he plays next.
That would leave the way open for Chelsea to take him to Stamford Bridge.
There is always the possibility that the Portuguese could then return to haunt United, with a goal or two keeping them out of the top four.
Chelsea likely to make winter signings
Chelsea have struggled this season and currently sit eighth in the Premier League standings.
Graham Potter’s arrival after Thomas Tuchel’s dismissal had an initial positive impact on results.
However, they will return from the World Cup break having not won a top-flight game since October 16.
Two draws and three straight losses have outlined the need for January reinforcements. A few players have been linked but none would come with the same superstar status as Ronaldo.
Whether he is the same player as he was a few years ago is open to debate. But he cannot score goals on the bench and that is where he has been for the majority of the current campaign.
Chelsea clearly want Ronaldo and the player wants out of United. But, as ever, things are never straight forward.
And everyone will wait to see how the story plays out over the next few weeks.
