'Crazy': Storm Surge and Flooding Hits Sanibel as Eta Brings Soaking Conditions to Florida

Eta briefly restrengthened to a Category 1 hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday on the morning of November 11, before weakening again to a tropical storm as it moved toward the west coast of Florida.

Footage posted by Shane Spring shows him crossing the Sanibel Causeway into Sanibel as the storm surge hits the road. “Crazy on the way to Sanibel,” wrote Spring.

Another video shows Spring wading through floodwater. “We have not have water like this,” says Spring, “in my almost 35-40 years on Sanibel.”

As of 4 pm EST, the National Hurricane Center in Miami had warned of a “tropical storm force winds” along the Florida Gulf Coast and heavy rainfall, as well as possible flash flooding in south Florida.
