Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey’s streak ends shy of NFL record after Commanders block field goal

Brandon Aubrey missed two field goals in the Cowboys' 38-10 win over the Commanders on Sunday afternoon

Brandon Aubrey’s streak is over.

The Cowboys kicker had the first missed field-goal attempt of his young career Sunday afternoon in Dallas' NFC East-clinching victory over the Washington Commanders. Aubrey, in the first quarter of the matchup at FedEx Field, had a 32-yard field-goal attempt blocked.

Joshua Pryor blocked the field goal for Washington, and Jace Whittaker recovered it and ran it back 51 yards deep into Dallas territory. That set up a 1-yard touchdown catch by running back Brian Robinson, which tied the game at 7-7.

Aubrey has been unstoppable in his first season in the league. The 28-year-old, who played professional soccer and in the USFL before joining the NFL, made his first 35 field-goal attempts for the Cowboys this season. That tied him with former Minnesota Vikings kicker Gary Anderson for the second-most field goals made without a miss.

Aubrey entered Sunday’s game three field goals shy of breaking Mike Vanderjagt’s all-time record, which he set in the 2003 season with the Indianapolis Colts. Vanderjagt went 37-of-37, but made just one field goal from 50 yards or further. Aubrey entered Sunday with nine of those kicks this season.

While the field-goal attempt Sunday was blocked, meaning Aubrey didn’t technically miss his kick, it doesn’t matter. The field goal is still counted as a miss, which ends Aubrey’s remarkable run.

Aubrey missed a second field goal attempt in the fourth quarter, too. A 36-yard attempt went off the left post, though the Cowboys held a 35-10 lead when the second miss occurred.

Aubrey got back on track to close out the game. He drilled a 50-yard field goal, his 10th on the season, and finished the year making 36 of his 38 field goal attempts.

Despite Aubrey's struggles, the Cowboys had no issues beating the Commanders. Dak Prescott went 31 of 36 for 279 yards and threw four touchdowns with an interception in the 28-point win.Tony Pollard had 70 rushing yards and a score on 17 carries, and CeeDee Lamb had 98 receiving yards and two touchdowns on 13 catches.

The win earned the Cowboys the No. 2 seed in the NFC. They'll host the Green Bay Packers, who beat the Chicago Bears on Sunday, in their wild-card matchup next weekend.

The Commanders, on the other hand, finished just 4-13 and ended the season on an eight-game losing streak.
