One-year-old girl among 8 new COVID cases in S'pore; seven imported

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) confirmed eight new COVID-19 cases in Singapore as of Thursday (22 October), taking the country’s total cases to 57,941.

Of them, seven are imported cases, including a one-year-old baby girl. All new cases on Thursday are asymptomatic and were proactively detected, said the MOH.

The lone locally-transmitted case resides in a foreign worker dormitory and was detected through the bi-weekly rostered routine testing of workers living in such residences.

Of the seven imported cases, one is a Singaporean and another is a permanent resident who returned from Indonesia and India respectively. Another two are work pass and permit holders currently employed here who arrived from the United Arab Emirates and Myanmar respectively.

The remaining three cases are short-term visit pass holders. Two of whom are family members of PRs, including the one-year-old, while the third case was allowed entry here as he was already receiving medical care here and had returned for further treatment.

All had been placed on the stay-home notice upon their arrival here and were tested while serving the notice, said the MOH.

The ministry noted that the number of new cases in the community has decreased from four cases in the week before, to two in the past week.

It added that the number of unlinked cases in the community has increased from none in the week before, to two cases in the past week.

99% of total cases have recovered; none in ICU

With eight more patients discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities on Thursday, 57,829 cases – or 99.8 per cent of the total – have fully recovered from the infection.

Most of the 45 hospitalised cases are stable or improving, while none is in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

A total of 39 patients with mild symptoms or are clinically well but still test positive are isolated and cared for at community facilities.

Apart from 28 patients who have died from COVID-19 complications, 15 others who tested positive for the virus were determined to have died from unrelated causes, including three whose deaths were attributed to a heart attack and another four, whose deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease.
