SHAH ALAM, March 13 (Bernama) -- All large scale gatherings and programmes organised by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) including sporting events and co-curricular activities at schools under its purview have been suspended with immediate effect.
JAIS in a statement today said the move was in line with the recommendation of the Health Ministry to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection.
"Programmes such as Kemahiran Amal Islami (KAMIL) for religious elementary school students, religious integration schools, KAFA integration schools in Selangor schools under the purview of JAIS have been suspended," it said.
The department also encouraged teachers and students to wash their hands regularly and keep a distance from persons showing COVID-19 symptoms.
Meanwhile, JAIS said it had also distributed guidelines for mosque- and surau-goers to minimise the risk of spread of infection.

It also encouraged the public to use the online 'Nikah, Cerai dan Rujuk' (NCR) system to limit close interaction with the department's staff.
Earlier today, JAIS had ordered all tabligh programmes and activities in mosques and suraus throughout the state to be temporarily suspended following the spread of COVID-19.
JAIS director Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the directive was issued on the advice of the Heatlh Ministry after it was found that a recent spate of infections originated from a religious gathering in Sri Petaling recently.
