Couple Sentenced for Beating Mom to Death at Hawaii Vacation Home with 8-Year-Old Daughter Nearby
Stephen Brown and Hailey Dandurand were given life sentences in connection with the death of Telma Boinville
More than five years after the murder of a woman who was cleaning a Hawaiian vacation rental, two people were sentenced in her brutal death earlier this week.
Stephen Brown was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for murder in connection with the death of Telma Boinville, Honolulu's Department of the Prosecuting Attorney said. He also received 20 years for kidnapping a child and burglary.
Hailey Dandurand, his girlfriend at the time of the slaying, was given a life sentence with the possibility of parole for the murder and kidnapping, according to the prosecuting attorney. She also received an extended term of 20 years for burglary in the first-degree as well as 10 years for unauthorized possession of confidential personal information.
“This is one of the most heinous cases to occur in Hawaii,” said Judge Rowena Somerville during the sentencing, per HawaiiNewsNow. “Ms. Boinville was brutally killed when she happened upon the defendants at her place of work. The defendants could have left the premises, but instead chose to beat her with multiple objects — knives, a machete, and even a meat tenderizer.”
Dandurand and Brown didn’t speak during sentencing, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported. Both were convicted of second-degree murder, burglary and kidnapping in connection with the slaying, per the Star-Advertiser.
The murder had rocked the quiet North Shore neighborhood of Pupukea. Boinville was a 51-year-old teacher who was cleaning vacation rentals in Oahu's North Shore for extra money.

Her 8-year-old daughter Makana was waiting for her mom in the car, when Boinville was set upon and killed. The young girl was then kidnapped, tied up inside the home, and told her mother had been murdered.
During Brown’s trial, prosecutors said Boinville walked in on Brown and allegedly Dandurand as they were burglarizing the home. Brown tied her up and she was killed with a machete and other weapons, according to Hawaii News Now.

At the sentencing, Boinville’s husband, Kevin Emery, testified about his now 14-year-old daughter’s ordeal.
“My daughter sleeps in my bed more than her own,” he told the court, Island News reported. “She don't go into a home or a house, bedroom, bathroom, or even a kitchen unless I check if it's safe. I drove her to school for three years. Three years I drove her and I picked her up from school because she's terrified. She wouldn't be here today because she's terrified of what these two have done to her.”
