Country Singer Sarahbeth Taite Shares Story Behind Her Video of Baby No. 2's 'Gender Reveal' Gone Wrong (Exclusive)
The country singer's special moment didn't go as planned, but she says what fate had in store was even better
Sarahbeth Taite's sex reveal for baby No. 2 didn't go quite according to plan, but it was still a special moment for her soon-to-be family of four.
In a video shared on Instagram and TikTok, the country singer, 26, and her husband Colby Shaw, 33, sit with their toddler daughter, Isla. While they ordered a cake to serve as the reveal — either pink or blue frosting was inside, and they didn't know which — how the couple actually discovered their news was even sweeter than expected.
"We get out to the lawn and start setting up, but we didn't factor in how excited my toddler would be about the cake," Taite tells PEOPLE. "It took us so long to get the blanket down and get the cake out of the box, and she's already getting impatient. You'll see in the video we gave her a little sippy cup that already had frosting in it that she could eat while we got set up."
When Taite and Shaw stick two glasses in the cake, the second the icing is visible, Isla adorably blurts out, "Pink," then goes back to her frosting.
"Neither one of us had thought that she would be the first to see it. It's so funny," the soon-to-be mom-of-two says with a laugh. "She knows her colors and we should have thought about that but you're so distracted in your own moment. And then she just came in there with the answer."

"It's such a lesson in how things go differently than you plan them. It's so fun when you go with the flow and roll with the punches. Things can end up even better than you expected, especially with toddlers," she adds.
The little girl is excited to welcome a baby sister, though Taite thinks she hasn't totally wrapped her mind around the concept just yet.
"Our dog is also a girl and they're best friends. So she calls our dogs sissy and so the most that she knows to comprehend is that now she has two sissies," Taite says. "When we say our prayers at night, she says, 'Thank you for my two sissies,' but I don't think she really understands where the other one's coming from."
From the reveal moment, Taite can already tell the sisters will share a special bond.
"The fact that Isla forever will be able to tell her that she told us about her sister is just so sweet. You think of all the different ways we could have found out — we thought about having the doctor tell us over the phone," she says. "We debated between cake or confetti poppers or whatever. Then for it to play out how it did was just so sweet. It ended up being able to be our favorite girl got to tell us about our new girl."
Another special moment the two sisters will have to look back on is Taite's Grand Ole Opry debut earlier this month.
"I feel like I'm still coming off of like a high from that. It was the most special night of my whole career," she says. "I've been chasing an artist's career in Nashville for really over a decade. I've spent time since I was 14 years old doing this. It has been my dream to have that moment all this time. So the fact that I got to do that with Isla in the audience and her little sister in my belly, it was so monumental for me."
She continues: "It's the cherry on top of the last decade and a sweet way to end the year and get a whole new start."
Taite adds that she is now looking forward to a quiet end of the year — one filled with family time before the new year brings a new baby and new beginnings.
"It all just feels like perfect timing right now. I'm in full nesting mode heading into the holiday season," she says. "I've been so busy all the way through Opry weekend. This whole year, for me, has been trying to get all of this new music out there and do as much as a I can. And now I'm really ready to enjoy my family, have our little Christmas and get ready for baby."
Taite "cannot wait" to see what 2025 has in store.
"I just feel like this next phase is going to be really a whole new chapter of me and my career," she says. "I'm closing out the year writing too, so there will be new songs."
