Could Arestovych simply be a technical candidate for Zelenskyy in future election?
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is weighing the pros and cons of holding presidential elections next spring, Foreign Affairs Minister Dmytro Kuleba confirmed.
Former advisor to the President's Office, Oleksiy Arestovych, announced that he is running for president. Contrary to some other opinions, political insider Mykola Davyduk believes that the "actor-spy" is, in fact, a technical candidate for the presidency.
The question for constitutional lawyers is whether elections should be held in the first place. Between 67% and 87% of the population does not think so, three sociological surveys, both open and closed, revealed.
“People want victory, not elections. Elections are a celebration of democracy, but now is not the time for celebrating. The first holiday will be Victory Day, or the death of Putin and then victory. Elections and democracy will not be celebrated first,” Davyduk told Radio NV.
“The President’s task right now is to defeat Russia, not to think about how to get re-elected. Regardless of who wins, after victory, he will be subject to claims that many were not able to vote and will thus lose legitimacy,” he said.
“Will the public perceive Arestovych as a real candidate? Even though he's currently emerging from the shadows to attack Zelenskyy and give a hundred interviews to Russian publication Meduza (which posits itself as an independent Russian publication), it’s so obviously deliberate. It all started in one day and is gaining momentum, Davyduk said.
“Both Zelenskyy and Arestovych are actors. So, we understand that the game is splendid. I, myself, would really believe that they are not in the same boat,” Davyduk said.
“But insights from their political teams talk about something else — that Arestovych is the candidate who must conspicuously lose in the first round. Arestovych is now in Poland, making statements to German media that leads to a decrease in assistance to refugees, the supply of weapons by foreign partners, among other things,” he added.
“Why is he doing this? It only plays against us. Right now, we need to forget about elections and focus on how to save the country, not our political future.”
