Coronation Street's week of episodes leading up to Yasmeen Metcalfe stabbing her abusive husband Geoff in the neck have drawn the soap's highest ratings in 17 months.

New figures on the BARB site showing the final consolidated viewing figures (which include recordings and catch-up) revealed that 7.89 million viewers tuned in for the episode on Monday April 27.

For Wednesday's episode, 8.08 million viewers tuned in, while the Friday, May 1 episode drew 8.16 million viewers. That's the highest ratings since January 2019.

The Friday episode focused only on Yasmeen and Geoff's storyline, following the couple through the course of a day.

In the episode, viewers saw Geoff continue to terrorise Yasmeen, at one point forcing her to undress in front of him and change into a revealing red dress which was too big for her.

Eventually Geoff's torment became too much for Yasmeen and as he came at her with a knife, she grabbed a wine bottle and swung it at him, slicing him across the neck.

While the soap's coercive control storyline has garnered praise, the Friday episode also drew complaints from some viewers.

Following the episode, 276 complaints were made to broadcasting regulator Ofcom.

In response to the complaints Ofcom said: "We are assessing the complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate."

Coronation Street currently airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV.
