Coperni has unveiled its latest one-of-a-kind accessory.

The fashion brand announced on Instagram on Monday that it has created a bag made 99% of air and 1% of glass with NASA’s nanomaterial “silica aerogel,” which it said is the lightest solid on Earth.

The accessory, dubbed “The Air Swipe Bag,” is the biggest object made from this specific nanomaterial that has previously been used by NASA “capture stardust.” The silica aerogel can “withstand” extreme heat up to 1200 Celsius and a pressure of 4000 times its weight, according to the bag’s description on Instagram.

The bag is also notably extremely light, weighing about 33 grams, or less than 1 lbs., and extremely fragile. Designers of the bag told Vogue UK that the special product was difficult to create, as it took 15 prototypes before it all finally came together.

It was created in partnership with Greek Professor Ioannis Michaloudis, who specializes in researching and creating items out of the silica aerogel, according to the American University of Cyprus.

The bag appears to be see-through and features “Coperni” in small white letters on the front. It features a rounded shape handle with curved edges — similar to the brand’s signature Swipe bag — and has a dimension of 27x16x6 cm.

Coperni’s CEO Arnaud Vaillant described the bag to Vogue UK as “magical, like a cloud,” while the brand’s creative director Sébastien Meyer called it “scientific, but poetic.”

The accessory debuted in the brand’s Fall/Winter 24 Coperni Show on Monday night. A model, who wore a gray jacket and pants suit combo with artistic vertical lines, held the bag in his right hand as he made his way down the runway.

This isn’t the first time the brand has gone viral with its bags. In April, 2022, Doja Cat, 28, accessorized her pastel mint off-the-shoulder Versace gown for the Grammy Awards with a glass Coperni handbag.

The sleek design turned heads as it featured a round construction with a small opening, which the “Kiss Me More” singer filled with candy wrapped in shiny gold packaging. She even attached a sparkling JBL speaker to it.

Since then, the brand has made even more eye-catching moves, including spray-painting a white latex dress onto model Bella Hadid, 27, live during its Paris Fashion Week 2022 show. The brand had worked with Manel Torres, PhD, inventor of the spray-on fabric, and the other specialists, who had surrounded Hadid during the show-stopping moment to make their vision come to life
