KUALA LUMPUR, April 25 — A congregational group in Ampang had to delay their house-to-house Takbir Raya rounds after they found themselves stuck inside the condominium’s lift.

The group of men was stuck inside the lift for about 30 minutes and a video of them reciting the Takbir Raya inside the lift moments before being rescued has been circulating online.

This is following a viral Twitter thread by one of the residents there, Rafiq Ismail, who shared that he and his family had been waiting for the group to perform the Takbir Raya at their home but was left waiting by the group.

Takbir is essentially an Arabic word which means to proclaim the greatness of Allah SWT.

It is part of the Prophet Muhammad’s sunnah for Muslims to recite the Takbir in celebrating Aidilfitri and in expressing their gratitude to Allah SWT after the holy month of Ramadan.

Talking to portal MStar, Rafiq shared that the incident took place on Hari Raya eve last Friday and his home was supposed to be the fourth house out of 10 to be visited by the group.

“During the night of the incident, my mum asked me to text the congregational group to ask for updates. Since we prepared meals for them, we wanted to know whether they’re nearby but my messages were left unanswered.

“Suddenly we heard the Fire and Rescue Department’s siren from the ground floor and my mum was worried that something had happened during Raya eve.

“Not long after that we were informed via the resident’s group chat, that the congregational group had gotten themselves stuck inside one of the elevators while on their way to the first house,” Rafiq said.

The 26-year-old added that the group was lucky as one of their member’s phone lines was working and they managed to send a distress call to the local Fire and Rescue Department there.

“After being rescued, the group told me that they were at the verge of panicking at first but had calmed down after they managed to call the Bomba.

“The group had gotten excited once they heard the voice of their rescuers outside of the lift and began reciting the Takbir Raya in the lift as they were being rescued.

“They even continued with their house-to-house programmes afterwards,” he said.

Rafiq’s tweets have garnered over 10,000 likes while the short clip has been viewed over 200,000 times with local social media users amused while also sympathising with the group in the replies.

“These poor uncles,” tweeted user ChocCipsBiscuit.

“What luck, it’s a Raya eve’s tragedy indeed,” tweeted user jainyyy98.

“This is like a scene from one of the late Mamat Khalid’s movies,” user MohdNorFirdaus tweeted.

Aside from that, Rafiq also hoped that the condominium’s management would be more efficient in maintaining the lifts as this wasn’t the first time such incidents had taken place there.
